It is now possible to consult information sources essential to research work on-line. Some of the first information sources available over the Internet were major libraries' catalogues, to which significant bibliographies, directories and other institutions' archives were later added. Virtual libraries not only enable users to access bibliographic records, they also permit them to search and read complete texts. In order to facilitate users' searches over the Internet, we have selected a number of useful websites, which have been grouped by typology and subject.
When first approaching a subject, it is advisable to start by searching indexes or directories. These are well indexed websites and are a useful way of finding out which information sources on a subject are available on-line. The Biblioteca Nacional recommends the following directories:
- Google`s Directory
- Intute: Social Sciences
- BUBL Link catalogue of internet resources
- The WWW Virtual Library, (association of volunteers who are experts in a subject and draw up lists of electronic resources in their field of specialisation).
University libraries also produce thematic selections of electronic resources, such as the directories of the Universidad Complutense or the Autónoma de Madrid.
