The European Library came into being under the auspices of the CENL (Conferencia de Directores de Bibliotecas Nacionales de Europa / European Library Directors Conference) for the purpose of providing access to the collections of the European National Libraries through a multilingual and common search engine.
The European Library currently provides a single access point to the electronic resources of the most important National Libraries in Europe and other library services. In this regard, not only does it aspire to become a benchmark for professionals and researchers, its goals also include providing access for the general public to this enormous information repository. The Spanish National Library has been part of the European Library almost from the outset and renewed this collaboration in 2010 for a period of two more years.
The National Library distributes the publishing and communication plans sent to us regularly from the European Library among information and library professionals in Spain and is leading the way in developing key products such as the project/exhibition of the major European books. Far more ambitious content is being prepared for this virtual exhibition planned for the end of 2010, which will have the “TOP 100” most noteworthy digitised works from each country, including Spain.
